Orthodontic Emergency Care

Even with careful attention, accidents and orthodontic problems can happen. If you experience a dental emergency while wearing braces or other orthodontic appliances, knowing how to respond quickly can minimize discomfort and protect your smile. Most emergencies fall into two main categories: appliance issues and direct injuries to the mouth or teeth.

Emergencies Related to Orthodontic Appliances

Occasionally, braces or other orthodontic appliances may become loose, bent, or broken. If this occurs, please contact our office during patient hours to schedule a repair appointment.

While waiting for your appointment, try these temporary solutions:

  • Irritating tie wire: Cover the wire with orthodontic wax or tuck it under the archwire using an object like a pencil eraser or Q-tip.
  • Loose bracket or band: Call our office as soon as possible, and we’ll secure or repair the appliance.
  • Broken or poking archwire: Cover the wire with orthodontic wax. Gently bend the wire back using a pencil eraser or trim it with clean nail clippers.

These steps help manage irritation and protect your appliances until professional care is available.

Direct Injuries to the Mouth and Teeth

If you experience a direct injury to your teeth, gums, or lips while in orthodontic treatment, contact us and your regular dentist right away.
